Today I was very honoured to do some great Workshop / Consulting Work for the fine team at University of Western Sydney (UWS) Careers out at Penrith. They are a well sized team of Career Professionals who have one extremely simple outcome, yet a complex and challenging role:
“Help Students Develop their Careers!”
Throughout this impressive journey in working with them, I was very lucky to be introduced to them by a fine operator by the name of Judy Holman (who does Internships with them). From there I met with Jackie, their fine Leader Freny and was lucky to work with a very high powered Elite Assistant by the name of Siobhan Markus.
Aiming this article at Siobhan who is the Woman of Moment, she was the hard-working Marketing Co-Ordinator type character that put a series of complex Focus Groups together, interpreted an array of results, organized all of her Departments staff together, kept me on track and well informed and helped drive the outcome of new “Top Secret Squirrel” thinking to better help its students.
Seeing Siobhan in action got me thinking of what it was like when I started out in my own Marketing Career. I remember it was challenging, adrenaline packed, very daunting at times but some of the most fun times of my life. There was so much to do, so much to learn, so many different personalities and agendas to deal with and most of all – it was a fun and awesome role to learn. I told her this too which she liked to hear:
“In my older Corporate Days Siobhan, you are the type of person I loved Hiring!”
The team itself at UWS Careers was quite impressive; a mixture of different characters who work night and day to support students to get ahead in the crazy employment world. I remember when I was out in the workforce it was tough getting a job and I am sure it’s only harder today – but thank god there are Career Characters On the house standing by.
My learning and advice from my experiences today? 1) Hire brilliant people like Siobhan to get difficult stuff done, 2) Listen to your market like UWS Careers have and 3) Take time out to work “On Your Business” so you make your offering sharper, more awesome and powerful.
I am a lucky man to work with these fine operators and happy days awesome friends!
