Self-Worth is very important concept in Sales, Marketing and Life! Being part of 4Networking and Grant and Karen Dempsey have been a great inspiration for me in this area. Self-Worth and Personal Success go hand in hand!
Without me pretending to be Joel Curtis the Psychologist (if anything I need his services) in my life lately “Self-Worth” has been a massive concept of importance. My own “Non-Psychologist” interpretation of Self-Worth is exactly as it sounds, i.e. how much we value ourselves.
Probably until this year, I like many other awesome people out there have had a very low sense of self my whole life. Be it business or life, I would never truly back myself, I would also doubt my own ability and to my own demise I would successfully be dominated by unethical meanies who would just take and take from me.
Without breaking out the violins (as that is not the point of this article) many experiences in my life have led to me a lower sense of self. Multiple times of homelessness, bad partners, mean bosses, bullying at high school – whatever, all impacted on me in this respect.
It’s not just happiness I am speaking about here – as I found out the hard-way over the years that poor self worth put me in some very bad positions that always came out the same way. Talking from a life perspective, it would be not looking after myself, not dressing very well, having partners that would control / dominate me and not take care of me etc. Talking a career / business perspective, this would often lead to letting mean bosses walk all over me, not standing up to mean co-workers, not leaving jobs and finding better places, taking on clients that don’t pay & make excuses, not selling myself to my full potential and incorrectly “Deep-Down” believing I could never be successful.
When 2014 started, I made it a key point to instantly upgrade my Self-Worth and treat myself fairly. Sure, if I stuffed something up or did something bad fine – but otherwise I really chose to back myself the the absolute fullest.
Bringing it more back to Sales & Marketing in a Small Business Context this revolutionized my life from a range of viewpoints. Firstly, I had a few people who were really using me and taking advantage of me. GONE! I had some clients that stopped paying me and were making excuses of why they shouldn’t. GONE! I wasn’t living and always putting myself down with my own negative dialogue. GONE!
Talking to the positive now, I used to think for a long-time it was just me. However, I found out very quickly that almost everyone I know has the same type of issue. It was in varying degrees and areas (e.g. someone say backs themself as Mum but they don’t in Selling) – but we all suffered from the same issue. As I put more light onto this issue, people would say “Yes Edward! This is me too”.
Firstly in having a new family, it’s made me really think about this on a deep level and make sure my own children don’t grow up thinking that. Secondly, healthy self-worth makes Sales & Marketing way more effective. Thirdly, life is much happier when you are being nice to yourself!
My advice and lessons from this? Really make self-worth a concept for you to be aware of. Think about how you speak to yourself, your own focus and realize the importance of it. Arrogance is never the answer (that is just fluff and hot-air). You want to do the right thing, reward yourself for that and develop TRUE SELF VALUE.
I trust that helps and you enjoy me pretending to be a pop-psychologist. However, talking something I am in Expert being Small Business Sales & Marketing – you MUST HAVE A GREAT SENSE of Self-Worth. Any sign of hesitation can lose sales be it online or face to face.
