I love the Robocop Movie Series! Beyond the Shooting, Stabbing, Special Effects and MIND BLOWING action, both the original Robocop (1987) and also the recent Robocop Reboot (2014) are key movies that I both loved and cherished.
I think they really deal with some core issues including Street Crime, Corporate Crime, Corruption, Companies controlling the Government, Personal Rights, Privacy, Technology / Cybernetics and of course exploring what “Human” actually means.
To me, whenever I watch “Action Films” I tend to really resonate from them at a range of levels. In particular Robocop as an adult gets me. Even though I was hardly rebuilt as a “Law Enforcement Machine” I spent some long weeks in hospital once upon a time when my government career ended. I was very touch and go (apparently as I don’t remember a lot of it) and for me later in life going through plenty of extreme situations reminded me of what it’s like to be “Human”.
Talking to Small Business owners like myself and I bet awesome people like yourself reading this; “Stress” is a massively tough part of Business or at least it is for me. It can be “Bad” stress in terms of someone attacking you, someone ripping you off or no money in the bank. “Good” stress (which is what I am feeling now) is having so much work on that it’s awesome and sometimes keeping up to expectations is a challenge.
“Good” or “Bad”, I think in business it’s really important to be mindful of our “Stress” levels and how it affects us in the work that we do. I learned a great saying once from one of my Trading Buddies Vic Noble in which he talks about one having to “Stay in the Zone”. Basically, this is the concept that many Currency & Forex Traders deal with an ongoing basis in terms of despite taking losses and not “Feeling Good”, they need to mentally “Stay in the Game” so they can keep up with the expectations placed on them.
To me, Small Business is very much like that. Things happen during any normal day that can “Throw” us out of our mental productive state and until we can put ourselves back in there, it’s very hard to make things happen.
Sometimes I think, “Pity we aren’t machines?” and talking to “Robocop” – what was interesting was that the stress, emotions and questioning the protagonist Alex Murphy would apply made him more effective. That is, in both versions he goes off to investigate his own murder. This led him to cleaning up the streets even more and shows that “Negative” emotion can be super productive.
My advice and thinking? “Being Human” can be tough at times and the reality is that we aren’t machines. We got to manage our stress and of course mentally “Do what we need to do” to respond to fears, problems and of course push ourselves when we need too.
I have learned lately not to give into my rubbish fears. Let’s say I am fearing running across a busy highway – that is awesome! I mean stupid lame fears such as “What if they say no?”. When I push against at times my own “Humanity” and make myself do something like that I get impressed at my own results.
So here is to taking action, getting it done, embracing our “Humanity” and of course pushing against it when we need too..
