I think I have been involved with Parramatta Chamber for four years now. I make that statement, based on the fact I remember paying their membership four times and it’s been worth every penny (or cent I should say).
The Chamber has a massive Western Sydney catchment and it’s been very good to me over the years. From picking up Mid-Tier to Enterprise Clients, getting great Speaking Gigs, meeting key influencers and of course (my favourite) helping introduce new people to the Sydney Networking Scene.
It’s been a great one and I get asked quite often about Parramatta Chamber with people having the reasonable question of ‘Should I invest my time there?’
For me it took at least 3 – 6 months to get any serious traction there. That is, first visit is just meeting people but when I became part of the furniture it become much easier.
The way it would work is that I would say meet 10 to 20 people each night. I would have a stack of business cards and I would firstly add them all to LinkedIn.
I would email them as well saying it’s a pleasure meeting them. For those I felt a connection with and saw some Win / Win Business Potential with, I would ask to meet them for coffee / lunch and take it from there.
In those meetings I would make great new friends and often pick up some work which was always a pleasure. From doing this for years now, it has built me a great base of clients and connections that I love working with.
When I hit Parramatta Chamber today I feel a warm welcome and know many people across the room. It’s awesome and these days I do my best to reach as many of their events as possible.
My lessons and advice over the years? Business Networking is one great strategy and Parramatta Chamber it’s been great for me. If you work Western Sydney I encourage you to come.
If it’s out of your jurisdiction, find a local Chamber or Networking Event you can be part of. I was very lucky to help start and launch many 4Networking Groups as well which was great. This combined with the Chamber was just great.
