If you have spoken to me in the real world for any extended period of time, you find out my love for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It’s an awesome place and I am planning my trip back there with my better half (at some point).
When I was there last year and I went to the top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai (the tallest building in the world), I started becoming a massive fan of it’s wealthy ruler, “His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum”.
He is a very liberal type of leader who spent lots of time growing up in Europe and he took that progressive thinking to Dubai – building on his father’s work to make it the powerhouse city of today.
I remember watching lots of interviews on him and there is this fantastic one on BBC where he makes this reference “Change or Be Changed”. It really resonated with me at the time and at the moment I learned this line, part of my life wasn’t going quite the way I wanted. Upon reflection of this and really thinking it through in hindsight, I think lots of it was due to the fact I wasn’t changing enough.
That is, if the environment changes, our objectives change, our goals change, our competition changes or whatever the case may be – if we don’t change to suit the environment / what’s required we can be in lots of trouble.
Be it learning new skills to deliver what we must (I have had to do this with Online Marketing), stopping things which aren’t going to well (when I pulled back from 4Networking events after they removed me from the leadership team) and forging new relationships when we must.
Basically, reflecting back on ‘Change or be Changed’ – I think it’s a part of infinite wisdom in that if we don’t change, our situation will change us. This is a critical part of Marketing & Business Success. I even remembering learning it now when I did my post-grad in marketing.
My advice and thinking? Be agile, change what you must, keep up with the environment and succeed in style.
Love your work, thanks for the read & Stay Awesome!
