There are two sides of marketing to me. One is the ‘Hard’ side of making sure stuff is working, the sales are coming in and say sales people in the field have enough copies of ‘whatever’ to hand out.
The other side of marketing is something I have spent lots of time considering later on life – it’s the softer yet equally critical side of stuff looking good, beautiful and being really compelling.
For me, I have always been more of a ‘functional’ guy and having a better half who is more of a ‘form / aesthetics’ type of character, it’s got me more thinking about the softer side of things in that regard.
Things like colour, fonts, photographer, imagery and say things just feeling ‘beautiful’.
This is the incredible subjective side of marketing in that you get it wrong, you don’t sell much. But, you get this right and you can watch your sales increase and go through the roof.
I hate to say it, but I used to be a bit of a slob at one point. Yes, that sucked and I look back at my old photos and I think “ewwww”, but today I know I am totally in the zone.
When it comes to our Online Marketing, ourselves, our sales material and the like – we gotta look good! We have to look professional, the part, serious, established and basically give the vibe we are awesome and can be totally trusted.
For me it’s involved anything from new clothes, to losing weight, to having lots of professional graphic design and the like.
My thinking and advice? The ‘Soft’ side of business may be not as ‘logical / measurable’ but make no mistake – it’s very important to get it right from the start. Get the soft stuff right, look the part and smile.
