When it comes to the most successful people I know, they are always ‘critical and independent’ thinkers.
In fact I cannot even think of one self-made success story who is not a leader in that regard. They are all ‘rebels’ in the way they think, the way they behave and how they approach life.
At some point, they would have told a mean boss to stick it; a jealous friend to take a hike and their own fears and securities to jump in a lake.
What got me thinking about this is the very awesome upcoming ‘Star Wars: Rouge One’ movie due at the end of the year. It’s a prequel to the group of Rebels who steal the Death Star Plans that setup Luke Skywalker some months later blowing up the Death Star.
I obviously haven’t seen the film and have become a massive fan of the lead ‘Jyn Erso’ (played by Felicity Jones) who is rejecting authority, obviously someone who has got into lots of trouble – but is selected by the Rebel Alliance to lead a near suicide mission because of her what I would argue to be ‘entrepreneur streak’.
I used to believe everything I hear and a decade in Sydney turned me from naive into street wise. I am now more successful than I can possibly imagine (lol) and a key contributor is how I have changed the way I think.
In short, I like many around me have transitioned from a ‘Follower’ into a ‘Leader’ mentality. It’s where you don’t believe what you are told, you ask questions and you back yourself; rightly or wrongly!
It’s critical to think this way if you want to stand out and win in that you can identify opportunities and ensure you don’t get taken advantage of. The reality is that the more successful you become, the more people will want to take advantage of you somehow (makes sense, more people know you).
My advice and lessons on this one? Be yourself. Have your own mind. Use it. Stand against the crowd. Do your thing.
Look at the successful people around you; I bet you a million bucks they really do their own thing.
Love your work, thanks for the read, thank you Star Wars and stay awesome!
