Even though my sandbox is more Sales & Marketing, I get asked quite often, “Edward, do you think I need an office?”
It’s quite a simple question, yet the answer is very complex when it comes to Awesome Small Business Owners like us. My first response to this question is another question “What do you want to do?”
The reality is that if you say get your own office, it can cost you thousands starting out. Let’s say you get something for $2500 per month. That’s great and all, however it can be a massive dent to your account and I always ask this challenging question:
“What if you work from home and put $2500 extra per month into your Sales & Marketing Campaign?”
With that question, people generally get my perspective and either vito getting an office (or at the very least they delay it till their businesses are much larger and they can afford it).
Talking personally too, I figured this out quite early and worked from home. I generally meet clients in Cafes, at their work premises and when I hold Workshops, I just hire out the Awesome Novotel Sydney Olympic Park – problem solved! Being more Sales & Marketing, I can get away without having an office however I do get that some business types just do need an office for the potentially sensitive nature of their work.
The relatively new “3rd Option” which I have many clients take is the path of going a “Serviced Office”. These are basically business hubs where you work in a beautiful atmosphere with full services. You are basically hiring an office “Part-Time” and you can use it for a range of situations from just getting out of the house, just having a “Real Physical Address” or even getting a part-time office that can work well for you. Let’s say you need an office for a meeting, sensitive work – or you may even have a “Board Meeting” of some form.
Talking to Servcorp, the are an Australian Success Story who have just great serviced offices. I just spent an evening at a Business Networking Event (on the house) hosted by the awesome Hayley Mackintosh at Servcorp North Ryde. They are very professional offices (better than many offices of top Corporates in town), you have great staff, top facilities and they are built to impress.
My advice and thinking? If you do need an office, may I suggest you strongly consider Servcorp in your searches. I personally haven’t found the need (yet) to have an office, BUT IF I DID – Servcorp would be the answer to my problems. Check it out and I think you may like it!
