You have to agree that the past 18 months has been arguably the most heated in global politics in recent history (as long as I have been alive). From both sides running aggressive campaigns on each other, the bar seemingly keeps getting lower and lower.
Or has it?
Interestingly enough, ‘Trolling’ is a word that is now part of my vocabulary and I use it on a frequent basis. If anything this word has really made its way into the mainstream language. As a gamer, I learned this term very early on and there are lots of definitions of it including some of my favourites:
- -ing, “fish by trailing a baited line along behind a boat.” (Google)
- “Being a prick on the internet because you can. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander, because it’s the internet and, hey, you can.” (Urban Dictionary)
- “Someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.” (Lifewire)
It depends on how you look at it as Trolling can be used for positive reasons, negative reasons and also quite heavily for Marketing purposes. For example, let’s say someone is being mean, racist and bigoted which you get lots on Facebook and the like – I will troll them and love it!
Equally if I say something really silly I expect to be trolled and in the times I have, it has happened.
Talking Marketing purposes and success; I actually want to talk about what I would call “Epic Trolling” of the 32nd degree was from my new hero Joy Villa. I didn’t know her name till I woke up today and now I am a fan.
At the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, Model, Actress and Non-White Joy Villa (I will come back to that point) attended wearing a very nice almost white robe. As things played out, she removed it to reveal the MOST EPIC MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN DRESS and hit it hard as a 100% Trump supporter.
As the left of politics run this side of things; it would have been very inflammatory to a good majority there and it forced the mainstream media outlets to cover her. As a smaller player, last I saw is that one of her songs is now #16 on iTunes. I am now listening to her on Spotify Premium. The so called ‘fake outrage’ generated by others is propelling her to marketing success.
The other point where I said she is ‘Non-White’. With some research she has both Italian and African parents and the left can’t stand this from many points of views. This makes her even more of a hot potato for the identity politics of the left (as it gives her invulnerability from the “your’re a racist” type of standard attack).
Joy Villa’s music is not my thing, but I think she is awesome as she is not only brave to go into the proverbial lion’s den and do this – she has used ‘Trolling’ to get out a positive message of unity, help take down the establishment and made herself lots of money.
